How warmth works

Fill weight is only half the story

GSM means grams per square metre. On a coverless duvet it tells you how much fill is inside: a higher fill GSM usually sleeps warmer.

The outer fabric matters just as much. Our 250 GSM fill sits between two layers of thick Snuggle Fleece, which holds the warmth in. That’s why a Snuggle Fleece duvet feels warmer than a thin cotton duvet with a similar fill.

Snuggle Fleece duvets aren’t TOG-rated, but most people find them comparable to a 10.5 to 13.5 TOG winter duvet. Read the warmth guide.

Synthetic fabrics, honestly

Why we use polyester, and its trade-offs

Our fill is high-loft polyester. We use synthetic fibres because they’re warm, durable, quick to dry and easy to care for, at a price that suits everyday homes.

They have trade-offs too. Synthetic fabrics shed tiny fibres when they’re washed, and those can end up in waterways. It’s an active area of research, and we’d rather say so than leave it out. A microfibre-catching wash bag is a simple way to reduce it.

Cotton

  • Natural, breathable and biodegradable
  • Absorbs moisture, so it can feel damp and dries slowly
  • Can shrink and crease

Polyester

  • Durable, dries quickly, holds its shape and colour
  • Sheds microfibres when washed
  • Not biodegradable

Neither is better for everyone. If you’d like the longer version, read is polyester bedding safe? What the evidence says. Questions we haven’t answered? Contact us and a real person will reply.

Common questions

Common questions about our materials

What is Snuggle Fleece?

Snuggle Fleece is our own signature fleece. It covers the front and reverse of our coverless duvets at 150 GSM, and the front and reverse of our pillowcases. What is Snuggle Fleece?.

What does GSM mean?

GSM stands for grams per square metre. On a coverless duvet it measures the fill inside: a higher fill GSM usually means a warmer duvet. The outer fabric also affects how warm it feels.

Is a Snuggle Fleece duvet TOG-rated?

No. TOG is measured for traditional duvets. Most people find our 250 GSM Snuggle Fleece duvet comparable to a 10.5 to 13.5 TOG winter duvet. Read the warmth guide.

Do I need a duvet cover?

No. Our coverless duvets have the fabric and fill sewn together, so they go straight on the bed with no cover.

Can I wash my coverless duvet at home?

Yes, if your machine is big enough: 7 to 8 kg for a Single or Double, 9 to 10 kg for a Queen, 10 to 12 kg for a King and 12 kg or more for a Super King. Line dry only.

Is polyester bedding safe?

Current scientific evidence does not show that normal use of polyester bedding causes harm through skin contact. We’ve written up what the evidence says, including the open questions around microfibre shedding. Read what the evidence says.
