How warm is a Snuggle Fleece coverless duvet? Warmth and TOG guide
Wondering what TOG rating our Snuggle Fleece coverless duvets have? You're not alone.
It's one of the most common questions when choosing a duvet in the UK. Here is the short answer, what TOG actually measures, and how to decide whether Snuggle Fleece is right for you.
What TOG is a Snuggle Fleece coverless duvet?
Snuggle Fleece isn't TOG-rated, because TOG is a laboratory test designed for conventional duvets and we haven't had it tested yet. In practice it sits firmly in the winter range: a 250 gsm fill with soft fleece on both sides, which most people find comparable in warmth to a 10.5 to 13.5 TOG winter duvet. The fleece surface also feels warm the moment you get in, which a cotton-covered duvet doesn't.
If you normally buy a 4.5 TOG summer duvet, or you sleep hot in a well-heated room, it will be more than you need.
What is a TOG rating?
TOG is a measure of thermal insulation. It tells you how well a duvet resists the movement of heat: the higher the TOG, the more insulating the duvet.
Traditional UK duvets are usually grouped like this:
| TOG rating | Typical warmth |
|---|---|
| 2.5 to 4.5 TOG | Lightweight, generally suited to summer |
| 7.5 to 10.5 TOG | Medium warmth, often used in spring and autumn |
| 12 to 15 TOG | Higher warmth, commonly chosen for winter |
These are general shopping guidelines. The right warmth depends on your bedroom temperature and how warm or cool you naturally sleep.
Why Snuggle Fleece feels different from a traditional duvet
A traditional duvet has a smooth outer fabric and an insulating filling, usually inside a separate cover. Snuggle Fleece takes a different approach.
Soft fleece on the outside. Instead of a cotton or polyester cover, the duvet has a plush fleece surface that feels cosy against your skin.
An insulating filling. The 250 gsm high-loft fill adds softness, loft and warmth.
No separate duvet cover. The fleece outer is part of the duvet, so there is nothing to put on or take off.
It's the combination of fleece, filling and construction that creates the Snuggle feeling.
Is it suitable for a UK winter?
Yes. Snuggle Fleece is designed with colder nights in mind and is particularly suited to autumn and winter. If you love climbing into a warm, cosy bed, it's made for you.
Everyone's comfort level is different. If your bedroom is kept warm overnight, you naturally sleep very warm, or you prefer lightweight bedding, you may find a fleece duvet more insulating than you need.
How do I know if Snuggle Fleece is right for me?
1. Your bedroom temperature. A cool bedroom calls for more insulation than a room kept warm through the night.
2. How you naturally sleep. Some people feel the cold easily; others prefer lighter bedding even in winter.
3. The kind of comfort you enjoy. If you love soft, plush fleece and a cosy feeling, Snuggle Fleece was designed with that in mind. If you want the lightest possible duvet, a lighter option will suit you better.
Does a higher GSM mean a higher TOG?
Not necessarily. GSM (grams per square metre) measures the weight of material over an area; TOG measures thermal insulation. Two duvets with the same GSM can give different warmth depending on their fibres, construction and how well they trap air, which is why we don't convert GSM into a TOG number.
Frequently asked questions
Is Snuggle Fleece a summer or winter duvet?
It's designed as a cosy option for colder weather. Whether it suits you year round depends on your bedroom temperature and how warm you like to be.
Is it warmer than a 10.5 TOG duvet?
Most people find it comparable to a 10.5 to 13.5 TOG winter duvet. That is a guide to feel, not a tested rating, so we don't make a numerical claim.
Will I need a duvet cover?
No. Snuggle Fleece is coverless and designed to be used on its own.
Can I add a blanket in very cold weather?
Yes. Adjust your bedding to suit your comfort, as long as you don't get too warm.
