How to wash your Snuggle Fleece coverless duvet: care and washing machine guide

Soft, cosy and easy to live with. Keeping your Snuggle Fleece coverless duvet looking its best is simpler than you might think.

One of the benefits of a coverless duvet is that there is no separate cover to remove and wash. The whole duvet goes in the machine, provided the machine is big enough and you follow the care instructions.

The most important thing to remember: give your Snuggle plenty of room to move in the washing machine.

What size washing machine do I need?

Because it is a complete duvet rather than a thin cover, it needs enough space to move around during the wash. A machine that is too small can stop it cleaning properly, strain the appliance and affect the softness and filling.

Snuggle size Recommended washing machine
Single 7 to 8 kg
Double 7 to 8 kg
Queen 9 to 10 kg
King 10 to 12 kg
Super King 12 kg or larger

Important: these are approximate recommendations, not guaranteed fits. Drum dimensions vary between machines, and the bulk of the duvet matters as much as its weight. If it doesn't fit comfortably with room to move, use a larger machine or a launderette.

How to tell if your machine is big enough

Step 1: Check the capacity. Look for the kilogram rating on your machine, such as 7 kg, 8 kg, 9 kg or 10 kg. This is the maximum weight of dry laundry it is designed to wash, not the size of the drum.

Step 2: Place the duvet inside. It should fit comfortably without being pushed, squeezed or packed in.

Step 3: Check for room to move. There should be space for the duvet to turn during the cycle. If it fills the drum or is wedged in, the machine is too small, even if the duvet weighs less than the stated capacity.

Our advice: if you're unsure, choose the larger machine. Extra room is always better than a tight squeeze.

How to wash your Snuggle: step by step

1. Check the care label. Always read the care instructions on your duvet before washing.

2. Choose a suitable machine. Use the guide above and make sure the duvet fits comfortably. Wash it on its own rather than with towels, clothing or other bedding.

3. Select a cold, gentle wash. Use a cold-water gentle or delicate cycle. Avoid hot washes, which can affect the fleece.

4. Add a mild detergent. Use a gentle detergent suitable for delicate fabrics. Avoid bleach, harsh chemicals and fabric softener, which can affect the texture and softness of the fleece. Wash dark colours separately.

5. Let the cycle finish. Don't overload the machine or use an aggressive cycle. Once finished, take the duvet out promptly and get it drying.

How to dry your Snuggle

Line dry only. Do not tumble dry. Heat can flatten or damage the fleece.

  1. Give the duvet a gentle shake to redistribute the filling.
  2. Hang it on a line or spread it over a large airer, indoors or outdoors out of direct sun, with the weight supported.
  3. Let air circulate around it.
  4. Reposition and shake it occasionally as it dries.
  5. Make sure it is completely dry before using or storing it.

Drying time depends on the size of the duvet, the weather and ventilation. Larger sizes take longer.

Washing a King or Super King

Larger duvets need extra care because of their bulk. Even when a King or Super King is within your machine's weight capacity, it may still take up too much room in the drum. We recommend a 10 to 12 kg machine for King and 12 kg or larger for Super King, with plenty of drum space. If you have a smaller domestic machine, a self-service launderette with large-capacity machines is the easiest option.

Never force a large duvet into a machine that is too small.

Keeping your Snuggle soft between washes

Give it a gentle shake. Shaking the duvet now and then redistributes the filling and keeps its loft.

Air it regularly. Letting your bedding air between uses keeps it feeling fresh.

Spot clean small marks. Use a clean damp cloth for minor marks rather than washing the whole duvet.

Avoid fabric softener. It leaves residue on fleece fibres and affects their feel.

Use a soft fabric brush if needed. A gentle brush lifts flattened fleece. Avoid vigorous brushing or pulling at the fibres.

How to store your Snuggle

If you're putting it away for the warmer months, make sure it is clean and completely dry first. Store it in a cool, dry place, ideally in a breathable storage bag. Avoid damp conditions and sealed plastic, which can trap moisture.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wash a Single in a 7 kg machine?
Usually, provided the drum gives it room to move. Larger sizes generally need a bigger machine.

Will a Double fit in an 8 kg machine?
It may, provided the duvet fits loosely and can move freely. If it feels tightly packed, use a larger machine.

Can I wash a King in a 9 kg machine?
We recommend a 10 to 12 kg machine for King. A 9 kg drum may not give it enough room.

What about Super King?
A 12 kg or larger machine. A large-capacity launderette machine is often the most practical choice.

Can I tumble dry it?
No. Line dry only.

Can I use fabric softener?
We recommend against it, to keep the fleece soft.

Can I wash it with other bedding?
Wash it on its own so it has room to move.

How often should I wash it?
That depends on how often you use it. Wash as needed, follow the care label and air it between washes to keep it fresh.

A little care goes a long way

With a cold gentle wash, the right machine size and line drying, your Snuggle will stay soft, cosy and looking its best for many winters.

Remember: cold gentle wash, mild detergent, plenty of drum space, line dry.
